Truxtun Park
Roger W. “Pip” Moyer Community Recreation Center
Location: Annapolis, Maryland
Description: The new Recreation Center, within Truxtun Park, meets LEED silver credit requirements, as mandated by the City of Annapolis for new construction. O’Doherty Group worked on critical aspects of the design that supported the green building effort of increased sustainability, including the following elements:
- A minimized footprint to preserve woodlands, waterways and steep slopes,
- Tree preservation, transplanting of viable specimen trees, and native plantings to reduce irrigation needs and increase wildlife habitat,
- A green roof as a demonstration, stormwater management, and energy conservation tool,
- Rainwater harvesting through diverting rooftop runoff and HVAC condensate into an underground 30,000 gallon cistern, with the intent of re-use for irrigation of two existing ball fields,
- Curbless bioretention areas within the parking lot,
- Micro-bioretention areas (without underdrain systems) that also serve as planted parking islands within the parking lot for the purpose of managing runoff from micro-catchments in the parking lot,
- Dispersed bioretention areas (with an underdrain system) within and surrounding the parking areas to maximize water quality treatment and minimize water quantity and peak flow, and
- Critical Area Program Review approval to protect the waters and shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
