Fleet and Cornhill Street
Location: Annapolis, Maryland
Description: Fleet and Cornhill Streets in Historic Downtown Annapolis are in the construction document phase for reconstruction and undergrounding of utilities by the City of Annapolis Department of Public Works. The streetscape improvement will assist in restoring the historic context of the neighborhood. Additionally, a historic materials salvage and reuse study was completed. O'Doherty Group created a series of exhibits that were presented to public groups and the Annapolis Historic Preservation Commission. The project includes the following features:
Historic setting/structures/rehabilitation:
- A planning and feasibility study was conducted in order to evaluate existing conditions and develop guidelines for immediate and future historic preservation strategies.
- The study covered paving, furnishings, lighting and notable historic elements.
- The study revealed that historically the streets were paved with cobblestone, which still exists under the current asphalt surface.
- When selecting materials for the rehabilitation of the roadway surface within the historic context public concerns for traffic noise and safety were taken into account.
Site elements and trails:
- O’Doherty Group was hired as a consultant to Rummel Klepper & Kahl, LLP. to develop a palette of streetscape materials and patterns for the roadways and walkways.
- Streetscape rehabilitation will use granite curbs, reclaimed cobble gutters, and brick roadways and sidewalks.
Archeological features:
- Several areas were excavated by the archeologist with exciting results including early African-American artifacts and a well preserved corduroy log road.
