Historic Court Square
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Description: Court Square has
been in continuous use as a civic gathering area since
the courthouse was built in 1803. The task was to improve
upon the general condition of the square, while preserving
and respecting the space as a historic resource. The
Court Square project was funded by a federal TEA-21
grant.
The pallet of materials and design elements
are recognized as characteristic of this historic neighborhood.
A herringbone brick pattern has been reestablished for
the streets, which are being edged with granite curbing.
Crosswalks have been integrated through the use of a
special granite and brick paving pattern and a special
vehicular paving section. Existent walls around the
perimeter of the site are being restored to a historically
accurate condition, and appropriately styled light fixtures
are being installed to complete the transformation.
