Rosecliff Residence
Location: Seal Harbor, Maine
Description: The two-acre rocky
site, set with striking views high above the Atlantic
Ocean, had no usable outdoor area. The new owners wanted
some lawn areas but also had a great respect for the
natural qualities of the site. Lawn terraces were created
by using the on-site granite in walls that are designed
to appear as if they have emerged from the natural rock
outcroppings. These walls integrate the house with the
site by fusing the man-made garden and the natural landscape
The drama of this garden is that ocean
views are framed by lush planting taken right to the
edge of the high cliffs. The garden plan affords numerous
walking circuits, each with a different character.
