Olfson Residence
Location: Edgewater, Maryland
Description: The design of this
garden integrates the house with the picturesque 270-degree
river view and the natural qualities of the site. Outdoor
living spaces were created for year-round use of the
garden and to enhance and frame the views from the house
to the river.
A sequence of seasonal gardens between
the house and creek incorporates bluestone terraces,
granite cobble walls, bluestone walks, a realigned gravel
driveway, pool terraces, garden house, accent lighting
for driveway and walks, garden gates, garden ornaments
such as planters, and sculpture. The roofline and materials
of the garden house are inspired by the architecture
of the main house. Douglas fir beams, visible from within,
are used both as roof structure and as piers. Screens
fold and can be totally opened or closed. Teakwood cabinets
extend along one full side of the interior.
