Harbor Station

Location: Woodbridge, Virginia

Description: Harbor Station is a large-scale, complex, mixed-use community overlooking the Potomac River. While each area of the community has a distinct use and character all are seamlessly connected by consistent landscape guidelines, shared site amenities, and distinct entry features. Within Harbor Station there are 12 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, from paved to natural surface. This network provides recreational opportunities to residents and the public, with spectacular view corridors along the Potomac River and Powell’s Creek.

Landscape Design Guidelines were provided for the neighborhoods within this gated community. The approach is based on traditional American neighborhoods of the first half of the twentieth century that were commonly built to similar scale parameters. These neighborhoods typically have front yards that are well planted, often including gardens that extend to the sidewalk. The streetscape edge is defined with stone plinth walls or hedges, a requirement for each residence. All elements in the landscape contribute to the overall sense of place.
